Nelson Mandela visits Magdalene

In May 2001 Nelson Mandela visited Magdalene to receive his honorary fellowship. In Hall after Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika and the speeches we sang Mbube, which had been taught to us by the Viola Men's Chorus in Port Elizabeth. Mandela stood up and started to dance, echoing our swaying, and soon had the whole room on its feet. Jongi Klaas then spontaneously performed a traditional tribute. As John Simpson reported on that night's BBC news, it is unlikely that the college had ever seen things like these in its entire history. BBC News online report

December 2013 — In honour of the great Nelson Mandela, whose dancing to our singing of Mbube was unforgettable, I have uploaded our full South Africa tour video onto the site.
